Cheers to Healthier Cocktail Options!

Let me start out by saying this: I do not have a secret formula that magically turns vodka into a health food.
I know. I’m pretty bummed about it, too.
But! When it comes to cocktails, there are definitely healthier options than syrups and sodas full of artificial flavors and copious amounts of sugar. Don’t get me wrong — you’ll still want to indulge in moderation, because, hey, cocktails! But, at least for me, I feel a little better about those indulgences when I opt for a mixer with some healthful properties.
Because I am such a giver, I’ve tested out a few better-for-you cocktail options (I know! My generosity knows no bounds!).

Ritual Mixers

Ritual Mixers ($14 to $16 per 32-ounce bottle, from the same folks who offer Ritual Wellness USDA Certified Organic, cold-pressed, raw juices and juice cleanses) are raw, organic, low-sugar, juice cocktail mixes designed to let you create a signature drink simply by opening a couple of bottles. There are three flavors available, each one pairing well with different liquors.
Sol Margarita, for example, is made of cucumber, lime, jalapeno and raw agave, and goes well with tequila. Calcutta Lemon Drop, designed to pair with vodka, includes lemon, raw agave, turmeric and ginger for a nice bit of spice. The Rio Mojito, made from pineapple, young coconut water, mint and green apple, is delicious with rum, vodka or even sparkling water if you’re looking for a mocktail. The mint flavor really stands out, making this my favorite of the Ritual group.

GT’s Organic Raw Enlightened Kombucha Gingerade

Not sure you’re a kombucha fan? GT’s Enlightened Kombucha Gingerade (I found it in my local Fresh Market) will make you one … even before you pour a little whiskey in there! It’s got enough spice to hold up to whatever whiskey you add, and you still get the healing benefits of kombucha (not to mention the health benefits of fresh-pressed ginger juice). And there are just two grams of sugar in there. Sweet!

Naked Juice

Naked Juice is a brand my fridge is familiar with, but it was only with this latest batch of new flavors that I thought, hmmm, it’s tasty as is, but it would be super fun and tasty with some booze!
Kale Blazer boasts 20 combined leaves of kale and spinach plus cucumber, celery, ginger, lemon and more, has just 100 calories per bottle, and provides lots of potassium and vitamins A and C in each bottle. It has a bit of a green flavor, if you know what I mean, but it’s crisp and bright, and the ginger and lemon make it easy to drink, with or without a splash of vodka.
The chia smoothies — Chia Sweet Peach and Chia Cherry Lime — are, like, addictively delicious and loaded with omega-3s and fiber. But, it’s worth keeping in mind that, although these Naked juices don’t have any added sugar, the sugar content is still a bit higher than with the other options (18 to 28 grams per serving).
What kinds of cocktail mixers do you like best? Would you consider using a healthier version like one of these? —Kristen
