Food Fight: Powerful Yogurt Bars vs. Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars
Ever had a protein or granola bar with Greek yogurt in it/on it? Yep, us either. So when two — Powerful Yogurt Bars and Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars — arrived at FBE HQ, we knew exactly what to do … FOOD FIGHT!
Taste & Texture
Powerful Yogurt Bars: These taste like protein bars. Not granola bars or Larabars or the like — these aren’t chalky at all, but they are dense, heavy and filling. Sweet without being overly sweet, they remind me of a kind of chewy ThinkThin bar. Not bad at all, but a bit of an acquired taste. The Yogurt Creme almost reminded me of those Mary Jane Peanut Butter Kisses (you know them better as the orange- and black-wrapped Halloween candy) but not in an unpleasant way, the Chocolate Coconut didn’t have much chocolate or coconut flavor at all, and the Peanut Butter and Jelly was probably my favorite with a savory-sweet taste. All are covered with a layer of yogurt that’s smooth and almost like an icing.
Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars: These bars are kind of like biting into a condensed bowl of oatmeal, nuts and yogurt. There’s a layer of Greek yogurt on the bottom of the bar that keeps things chewy, while the nuts, oats and fruit are on top, and then that is drizzled with more more Greek yogurt. There are a ton of flavors of these, but I tried Blueberry Acai, Toasted Coconut, Orchard Peach, Cherry Almond, and Apples & Honey. All were very sweet, but the standout flavors were Apple & Honey, Orchard Peach and Toasted Coconut. I was really impressed with how naturally fruity they tasted and how the nuts and oats really shined. The yogurt on the bottom was nice, too — didn’t provide much taste but did add a creamier texture.
Winner: Based on taste and texture, Rickland Orchards wins this one!
Powerful Yogurt Bars: Each bar has about 190 calories, 5 grams of fat (3.4 saturated), 14 grams of carbs, 6 grams of sugar, 1 gram fiber, 20 grams of protein and includes some calcium and iron.
Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars: Each bar has about 160 calories, 10 grams of fat (2.5 saturated), 22 grams of carbs, 11 grams of sugar, 5 grams fiber, 7 grams of protein and includes some calcium and iron.
Winner: Wow. Those two nutritional facts labels are similar, eh? Neck and neck on just about everything, we’re going to give the win to Powerful Yogurt Bars on this one due to the protein and sugar, but it’s close. We like how much fiber Rickland Orchards’ had!
Powerful Yogurt Bars: The ingredient list on these bars is long and a little complicated, but not overly scary in the least (the protein comes from whey and soy). Plus, the bars boast being gluten-free and having live BC-30 probiotics (1 billion CFUs). Not too shabby for a protein bar.
Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars: The ingredient list on these is very similar to the Powerful Yogurt Bars. The protein is soy based, there are live active cultures and most of the ingredients are stuff you know like oats, Greek yogurt, coconut, honey, nuts and fruit.
Winner: So close again! These are basically the same, but we give the slight edge to Ricklard Orchards for including more whole foods and fruit.
And the Food Fight Champion Is …
Rickland Orchards Greek Yogurt Coated Granola Bars! This was really tight as these two Greek yogurt bars were similar in so many ways, but Rickland Orchards eked it out due to taste and a slightly more wholesome ingredient list. That said, if you’re looking for a Greek yogurt bar with more protein, Powerful Yogurt Bars is worth biting into, too!
