Can a Juice Cleanse Reset Healthy Habits?

Post-Cleanse Takeaways and Tips

Even the next morning, when I woke up, I was really happy to have everything I needed to make a vegan green smoothie for breakfast. While I’d love to tell you that I’ve continued to embrace a completely clean diet, I have to be honest. That night, my husband and I had plans for dinner and a college basketball game, so while I made pretty decent choices (a tuna, avocado and rice bowl at dinner, and a bottled water rather than soda at the basketball game … to go along with a few Peanut M&Ms), I wasn’t perfect.

Since then, I’ve seen big improvements in general. I’ve only had a couple of glasses of wine in the weeks between doing this cleanse at the start of the year and the time of writing this, and my consumption of processed foods (and snacks and dessert in general) has certainly gone down. I’ve even purchased some juices and enjoyed those as my breakfast on occasion. And — I cannot believe I’m saying this — but I’m really considering making this a quarterly thing. You guys, I just feel so damn good. My skin looked fantastic. I had so much energy! I think I might be a convert.

And, since I had such a shockingly good experience, I thought I’d share a few tips!

5 Juice Cleanse Tips

  • Follow the pre-cleanse dietary recommendations to prepare, and make sure you’re mentally ready. If you’ve never considered a smoothie a full meal, now might be the time to get used to drinking your nutrition and realizing that it can fill you up.
  • If you share your home with someone who will not be participating, make sure they’re not relying on you to cook for them (and maybe encourage them to eat elsewhere when they can). My husband was out of town for my entire cleanse, which was perfect. While I rarely craved “real food” as it was, I suspect that might’ve been different if someone had been, like, making tacos 10 feet away from me.
  • Don’t be afraid to eat if you need to. Knowing that I was allowed to snack when I was truly hungry (and knowing that wasn’t considered “failing”) actually made it much easier for me to stick to the plan. Man, food is emotional, huh?
  • Don’t count on it for weight loss. I mean, I think we covered that at the beginning, but I want to reiterate it. I did lose weight — about four pounds, actually — during the cleanse, but it pretty much all came right back when I returned to a more normal, sustainable diet.
  • Have good food choices available at the end. Remember, you’re doing this in order to get yourself on track with some healthy habits, so set yourself up for success!

I’m hoping that, by now, you guys know that I’m nothing if not real, so I’m really curious to hear what you think about my account.

Have you ever done a juice cleanse, and, if so, how did your experience compare? If you haven’t, does this make you more or less likely to try it? I’m still amazed that I actually enjoyed it as much as I did. Who knew? Kristen

  1. This was a cool post, it was interesting to read about your detailed account trying the juice plan….I have always stayed away, because I’d rather eat whole, healthy food instead! But it does sound like there are lots of pros to it, so I can better understand why some people love to do it.

Great article! I’ve always enjoyed juicing as a nice “restart” to my system. I would typically drink my juices during the day, but still eat clean, plant based solid dinners at night. The only reason why I haven’t done it lately is because I would juice everything myself, and just haven’t felt like buying all of my produce in bulk (and dealing with all of the clean up).

This is an interesting post and a thoughtful discussion about juice cleanses. I really appreciate that, because it’s hard to find thoughtful voices you can trust in all the DIET DIET DIET noise.
