5. Those Mighty Microbes

Move over yogurt, there’s a new probiotic in town.
Kimchi, the traditional Korean dish made from fermented cabbage, has long been touted for its digestive benefits. Today’s health advocates are promoting consumption of its beneficial bacteria for everything from allergies to obesity to emotional well-being, and people are listening.
What could what be once found only in specialty markets is now becoming widely available at your local grocer, and restaurateurs are finding ways to incorporate this spicy/sour condiment or side into their menus.
Before you stock up on wholesale kimchi though, be aware of its super-high sodium and sugar content and know that many marketable brands have been pasteurized or cooked at high heat, which kills off the friendly bacteria. So buy wisely!
