Fitnet

2. FitnetI love being active, but sometimes my schedule makes it tough to actually get to the gym. That’s where Fitnet comes in. You build a profile choosing strength, cardio and yoga routines, then watch a prerecorded video of a trainer walking you through the exercises. Once you start to follow along, your phone’s camera tracks your activity, and you get feedback based on how well your movements match the instructor’s. If you’re in sync, you get a rating of three. Your rating drops if you get out of step, slow down or stop moving.

You start by setting a goal for the amount of time you want to exercise and choose your desired intensity. Then select a variety of 5-minute videos and how often you want to work out — you can spread the videos out over the week, or do several in a row on any given day. I would have appreciated a little more guidance as to building a routine (or even a couple of sample programs), but with a little clicking around I was able to get the hang of building a custom routine. I added kettlebells, Tabata and yoga sequences, which was intense but not too strenuous.

If one specific instructor really gets you motivated, you can also choose to subscribe to a specific trainer’s workouts. Fitnet isn’t totally going to replace my gym membership, but if I’m traveling or can’t make time to get to the gym, it’s a great way to stay active.

My must-have apps are MapMyFitness, MyFitnessPal and Fitbit. I have them all connected and it’s nice that I can keep track of my exercise through MapMyFitness and my meals through MyFitnessPal and watch them all connect. I also live by my Fitbit app, my goal is to hit 10,000 steps a day and I will constantly look at it throughout the day to see where I’m at.

  8. Barbara Maye says:

Love all these options — now need to figure out which one’s I can access. Thanks

I really like Lark, it’s a cool and at the same time useful app.
I also use ActivityTracker to monitor my physical metrics on a daily basis.

It’s lesser known, but definitely worth checking out.
