Yoga for Kids: Dinosaurs and Outer Space Adventures!

My kids are used to me throwing in workout DVDs. They get really excited and pull out the yoga mats even if no yoga mat is needed. They’ll play along with “exercise” until they fatigue or get bored, and then they move along to do their own things. I’m not sure why “their own thing” always involves being within two feet of me and/or using me as a prop, but that’s neither here nor there. So how excited were they when I told them I’d gotten their own DVDs in the mail to review? Very. They were very excited.

Gaiam always makes quality workout DVDs for us big kids, and these kids’ yoga DVDs are no different. Each Yoga for Kids DVD includes three yoga practices and a bonus 10-minute session in themes every kid will love: Outer Space Blastoff and Dino-Mite Adventure. The DVDs are recommended for kids ages 5+, and that’s right on target. My 3-year-old lost interest in a hurry, while my nearly 5-year-old had the attention span to get through the roughly 15-minute sessions with no problem. Considering the inherently slower pace of yoga, I wasn’t at all surprised by this. The DVDs are a really good, age-appropriate introduction to yoga. Kids are able to pretend to be dinosaurs hatching, go on a hunt for fossils and blast into outer-space, all while learning basic yoga poses. I love how it incorporates both imagination and movement into something fun for kids.

We’ve been going totally stir crazy waiting for the weather to warm up, so these DVDs have been an awesome distraction and a way to get moving while we’re inside. And while they’re not going to get moms sweating, they’re still a nice way to get off couch and get moving with your kids! A good stretch always feels good.
