A Realistic Family Photo

I’ve never been very good about taking the time to get family portraits taken. I took my oldest daughter to get pictures taken when she was six months old, and that was as far as my professionally shot album went. I have thousands of images on a DSLR and cell phones, so it’s not like the documentation of my kids and their growth is lacking. But still, it’s “fun” to get the whole family in a picture together, so when my kids’ school had family photo day one Saturday, I signed us up.

Actually, I didn’t sign us up immediately. It was only when they sent out a follow-up email a few days beforehand that they had a couple of spots open that I was like, “Fine, Universe. I’ll get family photos.” What can I say, it takes some nudging.

The verdict:

It might not be perfect, but it’s decidedly us. And it’s perfect to me because I know what went into getting this photo and a few of the funny details that happened behind the scenes. You see, it was a cold Saturday, and my husband was at work working on a big project. He was going to take a break to meet us for the photo session, so I was left at home getting all three kids and myself ready to go. I don’t know WHAT I was thinking — I clearly wasn’t — when I waited until just over an hour before picture time to get us all moving — and it takes a good 20 minutes to get to their school. When I noticed the time, I rushed my shower, barked orders while blow-drying my hair, let my kids pick out their outfits and then had to get all of us coated up and bundled and into the car. I was basically sweating by the time we were all strapped in.

Avery’s outfit is eclectic, but perfect for her personality: a lady bug shirt, polka dot sweater and pink-flowered skirt. My son and husband are both flashing some ankle in their jeans — like father , like son. Emery had adorable red shoes on but they REFUSED to cooperate and kept falling off, so two of our three poses have her without shoes. The best part? The socks she’s wearing are Cars socks, and her hair bow is actually broken. The only thing that would have made it more chaotic is if she had blown out a diaper.

It may not be Pinterest worthy, we may not be color coordinated — it’s only by coincidence that my scarf matches my tennis shoes — but it makes me smile whenever I see it. Maybe I’ll start making family photos a regular thing.
