Nourish Your Hair and Skin From the Inside

how to nourish your hair and skinAs the weather cools down, your summer glow may begin to fade and winter dullness may creep into your hair and skin. Beyond fortifying your hair and skincare routines to combat the cooler weather, why not turn to the kitchen to nourish yourself with skin-loving ingredients? Paula Simpson, holistic beauty expert and co-founder of ZSS Skincare, serves up these foods to spice up your beauty and wellness regimen this fall.

How to Nourish Your Hair and Skin — With Food!

Paprika. The spice, which comes in mild, spicy or smoked varieties, provides a great source of antioxidants, including vitamin C and E, and beneficial carotenoids like zeaxanthin. The spice is readily absorbed into the skin, promoting natural skin radiance while fighting signs of photoaging.
Turmeric. Curcumin is the key antioxidant found in turmeric. Within the body it helps to combat free radicals that can damage healthy skin and promotes collagen synthesis, which keeps your skin strong and firm.
Ginger. The spice, which can be found fresh in the produce section or dried in the spice aisle, has long been used in ayurvedic medicine as a healthy hair treatment. Its antiseptic properties help to combat dandruff, and the natural source of vitamins, minerals and essential oils help to rebuild thinning, dull hair.
Thyme. With strong antioxidant and antibacterial properties, this herb, popular in poultry dishes, protects the skin from harmful bacteria and detoxifies the digestive system to promote clear skin from within.
Miso. The fermented soybean paste, which comes in red, yellow or white varieties, is rich in probiotics, which promote healthy digestion, control bloating, and strengthen skin immunity to help clear your skin.
Simpson has mixed up some of these spices into a spicy-sweet drink that’ll warm your insides and perhaps give your skin a healthy shot of nutrients. (We’ve done ginger shots at our local juice bar and it’s definitely a kick.)
