4 Tips for Making Valentine’s Day Special When You’re a Parent

I feel like there are two different types of couples: those who enjoy making a big deal of Valentine’s Day (like flowers and chocolates and declarations of love) and those who, well, don’t (more like: “Oh, crap, it’s Valentine’s Day!” — better get a card). I think both camps can be fun, but I’m certainly more in the latter camp. And I’m especially in the latter camp now that I’m a parent.

We have some great tips inspired from the makers of Mommy’s Time Out Wine to help you have a special day — no matter what no matter what V-Day camp you fall in.

4 Tips for Making Valentine’s Day Special When You’re a Parent

1. Get a sitter … or get creative. Obviously sitters are in high demand on Valentine’s Day. So if you haven’t gotten one yet and want some kiddo-free time, consider rescheduling your V-Day and setting up a babysitting cooperative with other parents in your neighborhood. Each couple/parent can volunteer one evening a month to watch the kiddies … this “no cost” option ensures you get at least one night a month to keep the romance alive!

2. Stay in and include the kids. Who says you can’t all celebrate as a family? Have your kids help to set a pretty table, make a special treat and create their own cards. This is a great time to show the kids how to express their love for each member of the family, as well as to set an example of how mom and dad love and appreciate one another.

3. Give gifts they can use. Romance isn’t only about sex, so consider gifting a coupon for a foot rub or a relaxing day without the kids. Pair the gift with a bottle of wine. (Mommy’s Time Out recommends its Delicious Red or Dad’s Day Off Chianti!)

4. Focus on love! Valentine’s Day is all about L-O-V-E, so it’s a great time to teach your children about how love is important in their lives. The ancient Greeks had different words for different kinds of love. You may want to research and teach their meaning. Each can provide a wonderful lesson on love, especially when a child can relate it to people they know.

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? For me and my husband, we’ll be at home drinking good wine and listening to records once we put the baby down. My favorite. —Jenn

A special dinner at home sounds nice. I’ve found that restaurants are too crowded, and the experience often is frustrating. So this year I’m leaving the night out to all the amateurs. – LOL!
