Grow Some Veggies, Save the World?

I really, truly don’t have a green thumb, but some new research has me thinking it might be time to give gardening another go. According to Mother Nature Network, a recent study in the journal Landscape and Urban Planning shows that turning your yard (or even just part of it) into a vegetable garden doesn’t just provide you with all the makings of a big ass salad — it can actually help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in a big way.

Want the quick scoop on how digging in the dirt can help the planet? Here are a few ways it works.

  • You’re producing your food and eating it in the same location without transportation.
  • You can reuse some household gray water to irrigate those veggies.
  • You can compost food and yard waste rather than send it to a landfill (although, as I’ve said before, you can do that anyway, no gardening required!).

These small steps can lead to some big results (hey, that sounds familiar …). Researchers found that an individual family growing half their veggies in a home garden had the same effect as an 11 percent drop in carbon dioxide emissions from driving a car.
So, what do you say? Are you ready to get down and dirty for the planet? Maybe with an EarthBox or something? It’s so not my thing, but I do like saving the Earth. And I have a lot of friends who are getting into gardening right now … so maybe I’ll give it a shot. After all, it would be nice to have my own source of kale!  Kristen
