A League of Their Own, IRL
Dolly Vanderlip Ozburn
About her: Dolly was a pitcher on the Fort Wayne Daisies and South Bend Blue Sox for three years, and she also played on the touring team that barnstormed around the country playing men’s teams after the AAGPBL folded. She was only 15 when she first joined the league. After baseball she was a teacher and coach, and continued to play sports, including softball, field hockey, and fencing. She married a man she played against on the touring team — nine years after they first met. They had two kids, and now she has two grandkids. She says she still plays “grannie basketball.”
Best advice: Don’t listen to what other people say. They don’t live in your skin. You have to live with yourself. If you enjoy it, then do it. If they tell you what they would do, tell them to go ahead and do it.
