There’s nothing more enjoyable than spending an afternoon outside with family and friends while cooking a perfect meal on your grill.

To top it off, grilled meat is tasty, a total crowd-pleaser, and high in protein.

Whether you’re cooking on the fly, for a big group of friends, or just having a simple, intimate dinner with your family, the grill you own has a huge impact on how much you enjoy the experience.

How can you choose the appropriate grill for your lifestyle? Here are a few things to consider while shopping for a grill.

Types of Grills

There are four types of grills: charcoal, gas, pellet, and electric. Each have their own set of pros and cons.

Charcoal
Nothing beats the charcoal grill when it comes to adding flavor to your meat. Charcoal grills are perfect for those who love the experience of placing the coals, lighting them, and controlling the temperature manually. They do take a lot of time to heat up, however, which isn’t ideal for any last-minute meals.

There are two types of charcoal grills; the kettle grill and the Kamado grill. The kettle grill is a simple model, round with a removable lid. This model is usually lightweight and easy to transport. Kamado grills are bigger and heavier and have an egg-like shape. They’re a very versatile model but can take up to an hour to preheat. They’re also more expensive than a kettle grill.

Gas
Gas grills are the most common grills. They’re easy to light and preheat quickly. Although they don’t add as much flavor to meats as their charcoal counterpart, they’re great when you need to cook for many people at a time.

Pellet
Pellet grills are a hybrid between grills and smokers. They’re easy to use — they light at the touch of a button — and their temperature is controlled electronically. Hardwood pellets give meat their distinct flavor. The only downside is that they need to be plugged in to an electrical outlet to work since their controls are electronic.

Electric
The fourth type of grill is the electric grill. It might not be held in high esteem by seasoned grillers, but it can be a good alternative if you live in a place where an open flame isn’t permitted, such as an apartment or townhouse. Some models can be used indoors and outdoors, and as long as you have electricity, you won’t run out of fuel.

How to Choose

How can you choose the model that best reflects your lifestyle?

If you’re always on the run and need food to be ready quickly, a gas grill is your best option. The same goes if you often have to manage large quantities of food for many people.

If you live in a place where regulations prevent you from having an open flame, an electric grill is an option.

Do you like having control of your meal from beginning to end? Do you need that extra flavor brought on by coals? In both cases, a charcoal grill can be a great option for you. If you like taking your time and have the space and the proper support for a heavy grill, you might want to try the Kamado grill. If not, a simple kettle grill is faster to heat, takes up less space, and costs less.

If you like to frequently grill and smoke your meat, a pellet grill would be your best choice as it does both.

If you want to be able to cook when there’s a power outage, gas or charcoal is the grill for you.

Price is always a factor when purchasing an appliance. For each type of grill, prices can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand. It all depends on the quality of the grill and the accessories you choose. Remember that most of the time, the price you pay for your grill is reflected in the quality of the appliance.
