My Fitness Inspiration: Gwen Stefani

We’re talking fitness inspiration for this week’s Question of the Week! Check back each Friday as each FBG shares which celeb or everyday person inspires her to be fitter!

Yes, there are tons of amazingly fit and inspiring people to look up to. I’m in a career where I’m lucky enough to even talk and work out with them when the fit gods allow. And I have plenty of other amazing non-celebs in my life who push me to be harder, better, faster, stronger. However, this question about the person who serves as my fitness inspiration took me about a millisecond to answer. Gwen Stefani. Gwen Stefani. Gwen Stefani. (You might have already guessed that though, right?)

And, honest-to-goodness, she’s been my fitness inspiration for almost 10 years. Growing up with an apple-shape, when I was younger I used to aspire to have nice abs like hers. Today, I want a strong core like hers. When I was younger, I wanted to be funky and outspoken like her. Today, I want to embrace her confidence and ability to be unabashedly and honestly herself. Then, I wanted to dress like her. Now, I want to have my own sense of style. Back in the day, I wanted to be the life of the party. These days, I want her energy and youthfulness at age 43 (yeah, she’s really 43). As a teen, I wanted to be more than “just a girl.” As an adult, I want the trifecta of career, family and practicing many passions like she does.

Tish and I saw No Doubt in 2009. Had killer seats---and I learned that tube tops in photos can give you the appearance of being naked.

And so, almost every time I get in a tight spot where I don’t want to work out or I’m ready to take a break or cut the burpees short or lift a little less, I—as corny as it sounds—ask myself what would Gwen do? Or, what would I do if Gwen were standing right next to me? Would I push a bit harder and focus? Would I find the extra time to work my core? Would I jump on the bigger box? Would I do push-ups on my toes instead of my knees? Hell, yes, I would. (Gwen doesn’t do it for ya? Try Bob. He’s a good one, too!)

And that’s why almost every single workout I do is musically powered by some Gwen or No Doubt. “What You Waiting For?” is probably my favorite song of hers of all, as the lyrics speak to breaking through fear and just going for it. No matter what I’m working on—pull-ups, running faster or even a new business project—it works.

Do you have a rock star or other celeb as your biggest fitness inspiration? Or is it someone a little closer to home who motivates you to be your fittest? Do tell! —Jenn
