Yesterday we had a chance to chat up Kenya Moore, aka Mizz Moore, about her workouts, healthy eats and new workout DVD. And today we’re reviewing Kenya Moore: Booty Boot Camp, which promises to give ladies everywhere a “Stallion Booty”—with curves in all the right places. So just how does it deliver?

Well, it’s certainly all about the booty. After a 14-minute dynamic warm-up (which seemed a little slow to me—wish there was a condensed version that didn’t include intros and quite so many moves), you have three levels to choose from, each lasting 20 minutes. Every level starts with you on the mat, doing what I would call Buns of Steel type moves. You’ve got your leg lifts, kick-backs and all kinds of moves that have been popular since the 80s. Then, you flip over for some hip bridges with lots of leg-lifting variations, and then you stand up and do some standing leg work.

As the levels progress, each gets more difficult and builds on the basic moves you do in Level 1. So in Level 1 you do some hip bridges and squats and lunges, while in Level 2 you’re doing hip bridges with a hold and side lunges, and in Level 3 you’re doing hip bridges with a leg up and a (rather pretty) squat-curtsey-lunge combo. The progression is nice, even if the moves and pacing are incredibly slow and a little repetitive. Although, methinks, the repetitiveness probably isn’t helped by the music, which has a rather hypnotizing steady beat and is the same for all three levels. (Mixing it up—and maybe speeding the pace up from each level—would have really helped.) The workout DVD ends with a 12-minute ab and cool-down section, or you have the option of doing a 4-minute cool-down only segment (it’s the same clip, just trimmed).

While you’ve probably already done most of the moves that make up the Booty Boot Camp workouts, I really was smitten with the squat-curtsey-lunge combo (so natural—why didn’t I think of combining those?!). And some of Kenya’s signature “Stallion Booty” standing kicks and hip rolls were definitely interesting—perhaps also really good for foreplay. Hooray for multitasking! Kenya herself doesn’t do much of the talking or leading of the workout though; that’s left to Nikki Veal who does a really great job of giving form tips and cuing. Again, sometimes the 20 minutes felt like it was crawling by, but the instruction was quality.

This is definitely a workout DVD for beginners. While it will certainly deliver a SERIOUS burn in your booty (the kind where it feels like your glutes might catch fire and pop right right off), you barely get your heart rate up and even the harder levels don’t provide much of a cardio benefit. If I only had 20 minutes to work out, I’d certainly go for something more intense. But, hey, if you’re looking to not really sweat and feel the booty burn, this would be your DVD. And with all that said, the production value of this workout is top notch, as you’ve come to expect from Acacia.

FBG Rating (Out of 5):
Instruction: ★★★★
Long-Term Likeability: ★★
Music: ★★
Fun Factor: ★★
Meets Expectations: ★★★
Overall: ★★★

Fit Bottomed Line: Kind of like a modern Buns of Steel, this beginners’ workout DVD may not having you sweating up a storm, but Kenya Moore: Booty Boot Camp will definitely have your biscuits burning, burning, burning.

Do you like slower, no-sweat workout DVDs? Or prefer someting a little more up tempo? —Jenn
