Baby Bikini: Silly or Too Sexy?

What's appropriate swimwear for babies? Credit: Morgan for Mizzou

Another day, another controversy raising a stir in the mamahood. This time? String bikinis for babies.

There is always going to be a product out there that people deem inappropriate. Maybe it’s Bratz dolls or padded bras for the pre-teen set. And I’ve railed against Skechers Shape-Ups for tweens (but that’s more because of the pro-slimming nature of the product than anything else). But to me, baby string bikinis—which the company created as a gag gift—just aren’t controversial.

There’s no way I would spend $30 on a bikini that my daughter would outgrow before the end of her swim sessions, but I don’t think that baby bikinis are “too sexy” for babies—not when a baby can just as easily go topless without causing a scandal on the beach! If anything, I think they’re just funny, not cause for uproar.

Maybe I’m just being generous and laid-back today, but I think bikinis for bambinos is just harmless fun. But don’t even get me started on Toddlers & Tiaras. —Erin
