Review: Tina Fey’s Bossypants, Or A Love Letter to Tina Fey’s Book

Tina Fey Bossypants book review

Tina Fey's Bossypants is a fun read if you can steal a few minutes to yourself.

I’ve always been a Tina Fey fan. From SNL to Mean Girls to 30 Rock, I think the woman can do no wrong. I picked up Tina Fey’s Bossypants book hoping for a bit of an inside look into the background and life of the comedy superstar as well as what her life is like as a super-busy mom. Instead of buying the book (sorry, Tina, budget!), I sat on a waiting list at the library for what felt like an eternity. It was worth the wait.

With so many laugh-out-loud moments, Tina regales you with her early adventures in theater, commentary on body image and Photoshop, and how she got to where she is in the comedy world. Especially hilarious is the chapter on taking a honeymoon cruise, which I read while on a cruise, so I especially appreciated her take on all of the nuances of sailing the high seas en masse. Chapters “Remembrances of Being Very Very Skinny” and “Remembrances of Being a Little Bit Fat” were extremely funny; I think every woman can relate to her bullet points about fluctuations in weight and how they felt at the time.

And while I loved all of the humorous anecdotes and behind-the-scenes scoop on SNL and 30 Rock (including best-of-the-best excerpts and jokes), I really enjoyed hearing about her daughter and her experiences with motherhood: “For the record: epidural, vaginal delivery, did not poop on table.” Ha! You learn just how she manages to balance it all, which sounds like a constant work in progress. It also sounds like she brings her daughter along a lot and she gets help from a “babysitter” (she refuses to use the “nanny” moniker). And while she didn’t stick with breastfeeding, I love her candid take on it and pumping watching HBO. Add all of this to her viewpoint on women in comedy and how BS it is that certain things still get said about women, and this book was a win-win-win.

Have you read Bossypants? Love TF as much as I do? Wonder what she’ll have Liz Lemon do next? —Erin
