How High-Tech Are Your Baby Gadgets?

Back when I was pregnant with my first—and having total overwhelmed meltdowns at Babies “R” Us—I always tried to keep in mind wants vs. needs when it came to baby products. After having watched the Babies movie, I’ve really been trying to stick with a minimalist mindset. As minimalist as you can be with a kiddo around, anyway. This mindset is further emphasized when I buy toys for my daughter and she’s just as happy carrying around her socks and shoes or playing with an empty oatmeal container.
But even in a less-is-more frame of mind, it’s easy to get seduced by amazing baby products and gadgets out there. When I registered for a baby monitor, I went with a basic model. My thought was that I don’t live in a mansion and I’d never be that far from my sleeping child, so why go for the video splurge? Now, as a mom who wants to check on a sleeping baby but is loathe to risk disturbing that baby, I can really see the advantage of a video model. So when I saw the new iBaby Monitor…well, it made me want to go a little high-tech.
The iBaby Monitor lets parents monitor their little one through the iBaby App on the iPod touch, iPhone and iPad or a free PC desktop application. The system comes with a free-standing camera, wall-mounting bracket and accessories, and parents can follow the baby, get alerts and even share access with other loved ones. Parents can check in on their baby from their computer or a mobile device whether they’re in the next room or across the world. Two-way audio capabilities also let parents talk to the baby, so if your baby is soothed simply hearing your voice, this could save you a lot of legwork!
The device is a bit pricey at $199.95, but it’s a way cool way to monitor your child—and maybe one of those gadgets the dad-to-be will get excited about. Not all expectant fathers get pumped about diaper pails, after all.
