They Can Do Muffins, But Can They Do Pizza? Trying Vitalicious VitaPizza

VitaPizza is just...okay in our books.

We had high hopes for the VitaPizza.

When it comes to low-calorie sweet treats, Vitalicious pretty much has it figured out. Heck, its VitaTops practically have a cult following. So when the company offered up its new VitaPizza for us to microwave up and put in our belly, we were hungry to say yes.
A few things before we get started: 1) I love pizza. 2) I’m not opposed to microwave or oven-baked pizza. Kind of like it, in fact. 3) I typically don’t do any gluten or dairy (which are both in these little mini pizzas), but all good things in moderation! 4) I often do the mini-meal thing. So smaller portions at meal-time are A-okay with me.
Now that you know that, let’s discuss the single-serving frozen VitaPizza. Each one of these—Cheese & Tomato and Meatless Pepperoni Supreme—have 190 calories, no artificial ingredients, no preservatives, about 3 grams of fat, about 15 grams of protein and an incredible 19 grams of fiber. If you normally don’t get a ton of fiber (especially if it’s not from chicory root, which is what VitaPizza has in it) in your day, be warned that these might cause some cramping. And gas explosions. You’ve been warned. Other than that though, the ingredient list is pretty clean for a frozen pizza, and the nutritionals are kind of ridiculously ideal.
Time to talk taste. The photo on the cover of the VitaPizza looks pretty darn delicious, right? Well, it doesn’t look quite that good after cooking. The toppings aren’t nearly as robust, and there’s less cheese than you’d expect. But vegetarian-friendly, both have a thin and very crunchy crust (like a cracker almost), even when cooked in the microwave, which is no easy feat. (They can also be cooked in a toaster oven or conventional oven.) Although it also makes the pizza seem a little dry and kind of small.
While the tomato sauce is good and you can see real veggies on the pizza, the overall taste on both VitaPizza flavors is just kind of…eh. They’re just not tasty enough to crave nor are they good enough to satisfy a super big hankering for good, gooey pizza. So would we tell you not to try these? Nope—who knows, you might love pizza on a cracker and/or be fine with lesser taste for the nutrition facts and convenience. But, for us, we’d rather go out for the pizza we’re really craving, order a side salad and enjoy a piece or two of the good stuff.
In the battle of convenience, taste and nutritionals, which reigns supreme for you? And any other reviews of the VitaPizza? Share ’em! —Jenn
