A-Frame’s Kitchen Fries: A Modern Picnic Indeed!

It’s been a couple of days, yet I’m still a bit flabbergasted by the delightful treat I had at A-Frame, one of Roy Choi’s restaurants the food world is buzzing about.
Backstory time: Jenn happened to catch an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s newest show on CNN, Parts Unknown, that featured Choi and all of his wonderful Los Angeles restaurants. She insisted, quite adamantly, that I find time to check one of the joints out and see if Mr. Bourdain was still telling it straight. He is.
A-Frame is this modern, hipster-like joint in Culver City with loud music and even louder drinks. I ordered a drink (not currently on the menu) that featured some really tasty bourbon in a goblet glass and said hello to the gods of libations within minutes. My dinner, the warm cornbread and chicken salad, was amazing and a hodge-podge of flavors, but the trophy for best healthiest obsession has to go to Choi’s kitchen fries, which consisted of purple Okinawan potatoes, Korean sweet potato and yams. Not only did this dish consist of THE biggest spears of potatoes and yams I have ever seen, it was served with this crazy kimchi sour cream that had my eyes rolling in the back of my head. The fries themselves are sweet and slightly blackened. They’re first baked, then lightly fried, so they’re not THE healthiest thing on the menu, but they’re a wonderful indulgence. The dip has a subtle spicy kick. Together, the two created a sweet and spicy party in my mouth.
I want these darn fries at this very moment. I craved these huge, long fries from a Six Flags in Texas for years. Now I have a new spot a tad bit closer to fix my french-fry frenzy.

If you happen to be from LA or have the opportunity to visit, I highly recommend you go to A-Frame. Take advantage of the free parking (that’s rare here, folks!), order yourself a fun drink and try those darn fries! —Tish
