A Kitchen Gadget Worth Owning: The Herb Scissors

herb-scissors-585For as much time as this fit foodie spends cooking, you’d think I’d own every kitchen tool known to man, but I don’t. The pickle picker, strawberry huller and avocado slicer are pretty useless items once you’ve become proficient with a knife, fork or, heck, even your fingers.
I believe that most kitchen gadgets are just worthless clutter, but of course, there are exceptions. The melon baller may not get used very often, but it is a functional necessity if your goal is to create spherical shaped fruit. And life without my food processor would be utter hell.
Undoubtedly fresh herbs can add a lot of pizzazz to home cooking, but cutting those soft and bendy leaves is often a messy process that yields a bruised pile of green mush. How often I wished some brainy entrepreneur would invent a gizmo to ease my pain.
And they did!

I found this handy tool at Crate and Barrel.

The design of this handy dandy herb scissors is so simple, it’s brilliant. Five sharp blades make quick work out of any aromatic plant. Just snip away.  The scissor comes equipped with a dual-purpose cover that not only protects the blades, but also aids in clean up.

Just run the notches of the cover down the blades to remove any pieces of herbs.

No matter your needs, be it a pile of rough chopped basil for bouillabaisse or a lovely chiffonade of mint, this culinary wonder will efficiently get the job done.

Ribbons of herbs make a beautiful garnish.

I may sound like an infomercial, but seriously, this kitchen tool is one that no home cook should be without. No fuss, no muss and no more picking half-inch pieces of cilantro out of your teeth.
There aren’t a lot of kitchen tools I’d recommend (that butter spreader thingamabob they sell on late night TV would be a “no”) but for $8.95, these fancy schmancy herb scissors are a bargain.
What’s your take? Is the herb scissor the eighth wonder of the world or not? —Karen
