Frozen Popcorn: A Fun Spin on a Classic Treat

FrozenPopcornI swear, my best adventures stem from stepping out on crazy limbs. Last night my husband and I were hanging out with two of our favorite vegan friends. They’re great for food adventures, constantly looking for the next best vegan joint.
For this particular trip they drove up to our hood so that we could try some valley spots. We had it all planned out. We’d dine at Follow Your Heart in Canoga Park, Cali., then head to a yummy vegan dessert shop in a nearby neighborhood.
Unfortunately, shops in the valley close uncharacteristically early so we missed the dairy-free cheesecake by 12 minutes. (Yeah, that hurt.) We all were jonesing for some sweets by then so we grabbed our phones and started Yelping new ideas.
That led to California Mad Poppers, a frozen popcorn joint in West Hills. I love trying new spins on old goodies!
We walked in and were immediately pumped at our good luck. The different varieties of popcorn were ridiculous: indulgent ones that packed all the richness one can imagine (the Elvis consists of peanut butter, bacon, banana and caramel. What!?) and vegan, gluten-free options that made my sensitive tummy glow with happiness. It’s even non-GMO.
You eat the popcorn frozen, and can re-freeze it whenever and however many times you desire … although it doesn’t last long in my experience. It’s pretty much a perfect snack/dessert.
My sweet tooth comes and goes, but when the craving hits it always helps to know I can eat in peace without detrimental digestive issues. (The last thing you want to do is regret the sweet you decided to indulge in.) Everything in moderation. You shouldn’t have to deprive yourself day in and day out, but you do have to be cognizant about your dietary restrictions. If you deal with restrictions like I do, you know how important it is to find key desserts that work for you.
If you live in Los Angeles, particularly close to the valley, I recommend stopping by the shop. New flavors are constantly added to the mix, so prepare to be overwhelmed by all the choices. My advice: try everything that sounds good. They’re big on giving out limitless samples to help you decide what your signature blend is.
Frozen popcorn, you might just be the new cupcake!

What about you? What’s your go-to sweet? Ever heard of or tried  frozen popcorn? —Tish
