10 Tips How to Avoid the Freshman 15

7. Make active transportation your only means. Ditch your car: You’ll save money on parking permits and won’t have to fight for that one elusive parking space. Walk, jog, bike or scooter to class to burn major calories and get acquainted with your campus’ scenery.

8. Be a (sports) player. If you were into sports in high school but not quite enough of an all-star to play for your university (which is most of us), you may find a big hole in your heart, and schedule, where your favorite sport used to be. Look into intramural sports available at your school or even student-run teams. Try something new or stick to your old favorite, but sports are a great way to stay in shape, train hard and make new friends. You could always find time to fit in sports in high school before or after classes, so there isn’t any reason not to do it now.

9. Don’t use cost as an excuse. It is not as expensive to eat healthy as people like to whine about think. Canned foods like tuna and beans, microwave bags of brown rice, frozen veggies, whole-wheat bagels and bread, peanut butter, and fresh fruit are cheap, healthy and will last a while. Keep a mini fridge in your dorm, and stock it with cheap essentials so you aren’t tempted by quick, unhealthy options.
