Celebrate National Nutrition Month With These Healthy Eating Tips!

national-nutrition-monthDid you know? March is National Nutrition Month! And what better way to get in on the eat-right action than with the fam-bam? We recently got these great tips from Blendr—a cool location-based mobile app that helps users to make new social connections with those nearby who share similar interests, have a common background or experiences—on some great ideas to celebrate National Nutrition Month. Read on to start the healthy eating party!

National Nutrition Month: Ideas to Celebrate

1. Eat local, taste fresh. Eating a wide array of fruits and vegetables gives the body essential vitamins, antioxidants, minerals and fiber—ingredients that are important to maintaining a healthy diet. Locate and explore your local farmers’ market for the season’s freshest fruits and vegetables and check-in on Blendr to find out who else is there. You just might meet another like-minded family!

2. Start your day the fresh-pressed way. Juicing fresh vegetables and fruits is a healthier alternative to drinking soft drinks and fruit juices that have added sugar content. So the next time your little one reaches for the soda, give them this to sip on instead. Please, juicing is a fun activity for the whole family to get involved with!

3. Read the tea leaves. From chamomile and peppermint to green and black, tea offers some great short- and long-term health benefits. It contains zero calories (sans sugar or milk), and it’s been known to lower bad cholesterol levels. According to some studies, it’s even rich in antioxidants that help fight against cancer growth. Caffeine-free herbal afternoon tea is a novel idea and a lovely way to entertain friends—no matter how old or young they may be!

4. Follow the Food Pyramid. It’s all about variety, balance and moderation. A nutritious diet contains not only a healthy dose of fruits and vegetables but also the recommended amounts of grains, protein foods and dairy according to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Remember the Food Pyramid? Such dietary guidelines, along with being cognizant of caloric intake and overall food consumption are key in fighting off the extra pounds. Well, that and physical activity.

5. Get in a group. Studies have shown that having support motivates people and helps keep them focused on their goals. Connect with other families who share your passion for cooking healthier or being active. Set up regular play dates (the kids can play at the playground while you walk laps), swap healthy recipes or get together for a vegetarian potluck.

A big thanks to Blendr for the tips! How will you and your family celebrate National Nutrition Month? —Jenn
