Because even the make up artist says healthy, glowing skin is the best tool in your arsenal.

The Expert

Dr. Lisa Chipps, M.D., a board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon who sees patients at four practices in California, including Beverly Hills, Encino, Torrance and Westlake Village. She has a special interest in skin cancer prevention and education, regularly volunteers to help with free skin cancer screenings and has been featured on The Doctors.

In Your 20s

For teens and patients in their 20s, I recommend using a gentle foaming cleanser such as Neutrogena Ultra Gentle Daily Cleanser, and tell them to be sure to use a daily sunscreen. If they’re acne prone, choose a non-comedogenic sunscreen.

In Your 30s, 40s, and 50s

For women between the ages of 30 and 50, it’s best to stick to a gentle cleanser, like the Aveeno Positively Radiant Brightening Cleanser that’s oil-free and contains soy. Also use a daily sunscreen and start using a topical retinol, such as the Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair line.

In Your 60s+

For those over 60 years old, I find that many like the new, creamier version of the Ultra Gentle Hydrating Cleanser because it helps moisturize dry skin. This age group should also consider using a topical retinol, such as RoC that helps with deep wrinkles and, of course, a daily sunscreen.

All Ages

Many women are very good about caring for the skin on their faces, but they neglect other exposed skin areas. This is especially true about sun protection, and it manifests as brown and red discoloration, as well as wrinkles, on the neck, chest and hands.

Another common mistake is a bad habit of picking at acne, which can cause scarring. Instead use a salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide spot treatment to help reduce the swelling and appearance of pimples. Try the Clean & Clear Advantage Acne Spot Treatment that contains salicylic acid and dries clear — good for using under make-up!

When your skin is healthy, maintain that skin health with good solar protection. Consider a topical retinol as a preventive method for preventing wrinkles and skin thinning. Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair or RoC Retinol Correxion both contain topical retinol to help fight signs of aging.

If something seems not right with your skin, see a board-certified dermatologist to guide you in selecting the best products and treatments for your skin problems.
