Tips to Eat Better, Not Less From Ellie Krieger

It’s easy to assume that in order to “eat healthy” that you have to overhaul your entire approach to food. But, truth of the matter is that little tweaks here and there can make a HUGE difference in your overall health, mood and how much energy you have. While a total diet overhaul can work for some, most of us do better with a more gentle and sane approach. Which is exactly the approach Food Network Star and Registered Dietitian Ellie Krieger takes when helping others get healthy. She shared these tips to eat better with us. We had to pass them on!

Ellie Krieger’s Tips to Eat Better, Not Less

1. Change for good. First, try to tailor your food choices — making simple changes one at a time makes them easier to stick with. For example, try having one scoop of frozen yogurt instead of three. Or select fresh, crunchy veggies instead of chips alongside your sandwich at lunch.
2. Timing is key. Aim to eat breakfast within one hour of waking up in the morning to set a healthy path for the rest of the day. Space your meals out so that you’re not waiting too long in between, and incorporate one or two healthy snacks — like fruit or nuts — each day.
3. Get those (whole) grains. Quinoa is a high-protein whole grain that is quick and easy to prepare. You can prepare it like you would rice and toss into your salads or homemade soups. Or, simply serve it as a side dish.
4. Get your energy up. Staying physically active can not only help you keep your weight under control, but it can also help increase your energy. Simply going for a brisk walk after dinner each night instead of heading straight for the sofa or walking to your local market when you need to pick up just a few items can make all the difference.
5. Go nuts. Almonds are a healthy snack that will leave you feeling satisfied. Plus, they have a crave-able crunch and are a rich source of vitamin E, protein, calcium and fiber.
We love Ellie’s approach that it’s not always just about eating less — that it’s about making better decision throughout your entire day. What little tweaks have you made to eat better? —Jenn
