For the Athletes in the House: NuGO Stronger Protein Bars Review

Today’s NuGo STRONGER protein bar review speaks to two different exciting things: Sweet Tooth Week and the Olympics! Because not only are these bars sweet (almost candy bar like, in fact), but also they’re made for athletes (with big appetites!).

And by “big appetites,” I mean around 300 calories per bar. This is no small snack. These are either a straight-up meal replacement or a big snack for those training. That said, the NuGO STRONGER protein bars have a lot going for them, even if the ingredient lists are long and complicated. It goes without saying that they have a lot of protein — 25 or more grams. They also have around 9 to 12 grams of sugar per bar with no maltitol (a sugar alcohol that gives some peeps digestive issues) on the ingredient list. Certified gluten-free, kosher and non-GMO, the bars are high in fiber (7 to 12 grams coming from inulin and chicory root) and are made with rBGH-free whey protein and no soy protein.
They come in four pretty tasty flavors: REAL Dark Chocolate, Peanut Cluster, Cookies ‘N Cream and Caramel Pretzel. And all of them taste damn good. Cookies ‘N Cream was my least favorite as it has an oddly sweet-fruit flavor to it (almost alcohol-like), but the other three were fabulous. The REAL Dark Chocolate is thick, chewy and rich. Peanut Cluster is practically like eating a Snickers. And Caramel Pretzel may be my hands-down favorite. Salty and sweet with the crunch of pretzels and the pull of caramel, it’s kind of my protein bar heaven.
Again, these aren’t for everyone all the time. We recommend noshing on these if you a) have a KILLER craving and want something with more nutrition that’s more filling than a candy bar, and/or b) you are training your ass off. As the everyday snack for the every day person? We go with whole foods, of course! (That said, I’m still dreaming of Caramel Pretzel!)
Anyone else tried the NuGo STRONGER bars? Would love to know your thoughts! —Jenn

Definitely agreed about the Caramel Pretzel being fabulous — hands-down my all-time favorite protein bar. Lots of bars are tasty on the first bite, but too many start tasting ‘blah’ or chemically after a few more bites or bars. Not this one. The local stores here only have Caramel Pretzel and Peanut Cluster — I wasn’t overly thrilled with the Peanut one, but have bought *boxes* of the Caramel Pretzel one. Perfect as a small meal replacement during the middle of the day around 2-3pm, following a lunch of fruits/veg and soup.

Had the caramel pretzel nugo stronger bar and it is fabulous. Had it after my weight training workout and it is very satisfying and filling. Trying to find out if it is paleo approved.
