What Would You Tell Your Mom Now That You’re a Mom?

Becoming a mom has been my greatest accomplishment in life. The experience leading up to mommyhood has been nothing short of emotional and challenging, but Evan’s birth was well worth the journey. I never understood a love like this until I held Evan for the first time, and I certainly didn’t appreciate my mom the way I do now.

Now that I’m a mom, the one thing I would say to my mom is “thank  you.” Thank you for showing me love and how to express love. Because of you, I tell my son I love him daily and hug him a little tighter each night. Thank you for being nonjudgmental, even at my weakest moments. Because of you, I accept challenges and always try to see things through my son’s eyes. Thank you for asking questions, even if you didn’t want to hear the answers. Because of you, I questioned my choices before taking action, and I know to do the same for all choices regarding my son.

There are so many thank yous left to be said. I learned how to mother by watching my mom. The most important thing I’ve recognized is that our children are always watching. I know this because I always watched. I do things the way my mom did — even down to making her recipes to bring comfort to my family. The work of a mother is typically overlooked. It can go unappreciated, not in a malicious way, but because it is a thankless job that needs to be done. I didn’t become a mom for the thank yous or the atta boys, and neither did my mom, I’m sure. Being a mom is a joy of its own, and I thank my mom for instilling the ability in me to provide a love like this to a little mister like mine.
