Why Eating Raw Food Matters

raw food
Following a raw food diet can seem pretty intimidating (even though we certainly know that there are lots of raw food recipes that are simple and crazy delish), but you don’t have to go fully raw in order to glean the healing benefits raw food offers. We got a few tips from holistic health practitioner Carolyn Harrington on how to eat healthful, nutritious foods while finding the way of eating that works best for you.
Oh, and be on the lookout, because we’ll be bringing you a couple of recipes in the coming weeks featuring familiar flavors with raw ingredients. It’ll be (r)awesome.

  1. Be sure to incorporate raw fruits and vegetables into every meal. Eating raw foods means you are eating foods that are “alive.” Live foods have energy, and this benefits your body. Cooking foods (especially at higher temperatures) destroys not only the nutrients and natural enzymes, but it also depletes their energy. I often refer to cooked foods as “dead” for this reason.
  2. To make your diet nutrient- and antioxidant-rich, it may take more than just adding certain foods. Have you considered looking at different types of diets (like Paleo, vegetarian/vegan, ketogenic or gluten-free)? With so many out there, which one is right for you? Unfortunately, there’s not a one size fits all. Each person has a unique physiology, and certain foods work better for individuals at different points in their life. Take a look around and try some different ways of eating. If you begin to feel better, most likely you are on the right track!
  3. To allow nutrients to be absorbed properly, you need to improve your digestion. A healthy gut is a happy gut! One easy and delicious way to do this is by including fermented foods in your diet. Along with getting a healthy dose of probiotics, the benefits of fermented foods include: improved digestion, helps detoxify your body and balances your intestinal flora.

How did you settle on your current way of eating? Did you learn anything above that might make your current diet a little more nutritionally dense? —Kristen
