Reviewin’ For Your Viewin’: The Biggest Loser Power Ab Blast

Let Bob and Dolvett pump your abs up!

Let Bob and Dolvett pump your abs up!

If you are like me and are SUPER tired of your everyday ab workouts, then The Biggest Loser: Power Ab Blast might just pique your interest. Led by Bob Harper and Dolvett Quince, you learn to have a little fun toning that tummy while watching a couple of pretty famous (and handsome) guys lead you to success!

There are definitely some pros and cons to this workout DVD. Each workout is a 10- to 15-minute session that involves some pretty standard moves—but the short segments are nice because you can switch them up pretty frequently. Standing Abs was easily my favorite because it reminded me of a very mild form of Hip Hop Abs. (Which, by the way, is the bomb! But I am not reviewing that, so if you want a little more info just click here). All-Out Abs was more of your regular stomach muscle workouts with crunches and planks to boot. If you’re a hard core gym junkie then this section would definitely be for you. Going beyond the standard ab moves though are the other sections: Yoga Abs (for those of you who love some downward facing dog), Standing Abs and Cardio Abs.

Dolvett does a good job leading both All-Out Abs and Standing Abs. He is very precise on how exactly to do each move. In Standing Abs, Dolvett concentrates on stretching your abs out and spends what seems like most of the segment doing just that. You also do a lot of squatting, while twisting side to side, to work on your side muscles as well as your abdomen. You can definitely feel the burn in some of his moves, especially when he has you do air leg lifts. (Someone please save my thighs!) In All-Out Abs, you do a lot of work on the floor. Dolvett has you get on you hands and knees and lift opposite arms and legs straight out, then bring them in again without touching the floor. Might sound easy to some, but for a beginner it is effective yet not so hard that you want to give up after one try.

Bob leads Yoga Abs and Cardio Abs. Yoga Abs was much more basic than I was hoping for. Bob goes with simple beginner moves like being in downward facing dog and then raising your leg as high as you can and holding it. After almost every move you return to your standard plank position. In Cardio Abs, you are never on the floor and are always moving on your feet. Several times I thought I wanted to sit on my bum for a second to rest up but kept going. You do a lot of standing and twisting as well as some arm stretches. Luckily, Bob goes easy on the newbies and shows the option with or without dumbbells. The instruction in each workout is good enough that if you wanted, you could easily take a few moves you like and make your own workout routine that fits you best.

Each video has options for instruction and music only. The music is definitely not my favorite as sounds like a cross between techno and meditation music, but it has a nice beat that you will get you into a rhythm, which makes following the instructions and moves easier. This workout DVD also features several previous The Biggest Loser contestants strutting their stuff.

Although The Biggest Loser Power Ab Blast was not my cup of tea, every person has their own preferences. It was very basic, which is nice for us beginners, but I would have liked a little more movin’ and groovin’. All in all, this DVD was better than most ab workout routines I’ve done, but not the most fun DVD I have ever encountered (Hip Hop Abs!).
