What’s in Your Fridge?

On Friday, I opened my fridge and let ya’ll come inside to see what one FBG eats (or at least stores in her fridge). In the coming weeks, Erin, Tish and Kristen will all do the same, but in the meantime, we want to know what’s mostly in your fridge? So open it up, take a look and vote in our poll!

Were you surprised by what you found? Realized it’s time to clean the fridge out? Tell us about it! —Jenn

  1. I’d say it’s about 50/50 healthy & junk food in our fridge. My man has pretty awful eating habits — the corn dogs and Hot Pockets and ice cream are his, I swear! Mostly everything else is salad stuff, sandwich stuff, or homemade leftover stuff. Sometimes it is hard to go for the healthy leftovers when the husband’s corn dogs are *right there* though!

As a college student I don’t have too much in my fridge. When there is food I try to make it healthier, but quick. I have microwavable broccoli, yogurt, hummus, and the college staple. Beer.

  3. Hi Jenn,

Thanks for giving us a peak into your fridge. Even though I’m done the degree, I still feel like a student when I look in my fridge–definitely not as stocked as my parents’ fridge!

Generally, my fridge is usually pretty bare, since I tend to buy only what I’m needing for the week–that is, fresh produce and lean meat. When I can, I stock up on items that have a longer shelf life (like eggs, for example) or healthy stuff that’s non-perishable (I guess that wouldn’t go in my fridge, but that’s another story). I’m only one person at my place, so I don’t like the fridge to be too stocked, otherwise the produce just goes to waste.

Although it sort of does appear to be on the sparse side, you can always find the following items in my fridge:
    -Greek yogurt
    -eggs
-veggies (usually spinach or a bell pepper)
    -natural peanut butter
    -apples

Those seem to be my staples from week to week. I don’t drink milk as it doesn’t agree with my stomach, and I’ve managed to cull most of my sauces and dressings. I do keep the balsamic vinaigrette handy, as it’s totally my favorite with tuna. Still, it feels weird to have a mostly-empty fridge, even if it is filled with healthy items. It seems like my Mom wouldn’t approve!

My freezer on the other hand…I find that it’s totally a good idea to stock up on the healthy freezable items, like frozen veggies or fruit and lean meat when it goes on sale (just defrost and cook when necessary). Students should tune into this: grab the meat while it’s on sale and freeze it for later! It’s a good idea, even if you’re not in school. Meat is usually your most “expensive” item, so it makes sense to invest when it’s on sale. Once frozen, it should be good for quite some time.

I think acquiring things is a survival instinct, so it’s no wonder most of us have accumulated a lot in our fridges. It also makes for greater convenience if you have a lot of good stuff handy, either frozen or in the fridge compartments. Life can throw a lot of crazy stuff our way, and sometimes it’s just not that easy to get to the grocery store. I’m hoping to “pad my fridge” with some more quality items so that I don’t feel like I’m living so close to the edge. 🙂

    Best,

    Lee

I love seeing what people shop for and eat. Have you seen the Refrigerator Lookbooks on WellandGoodNYC.com? It’s mostly famous-ish people’s fridges, so you should do one with them! http://www.wellandgoodnyc.com/tag/refrigerator-look-book/
