A Superfood Treat You Can Enjoy Every Day: NibMor

You know that we couldn’t have Superfoods Week without mentioning chocolate, right? After all, chocolate — the dark kind that ideally has 70 percent or more cacao — is a super superfood treat with antioxidants and flavonoids galore. And one we love. OH. SO. MUCH.
But, like everything else, we’re always looking for the tastiest and healthiest version of our favorite foods, so when NibMor (Get it? Nib more? Cute!) sent us some of its chocolate — that’s organic, cold-processed, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, non-GMO, fair-trade and with no refined sugar — who were we to turn down a taste-test? (Or, more like, who were we to resist a taste-test?)

We’ve been noshing on some of this gourmet chocolate recently, so NibMor had big chocolaty shoes to fill. Up first, the Original and Almond bars. Both had a good deep dark chocolate flavor despite being a bit chalky (guessing that’s because there’s no cream, milk or other dairy in ’em). Almond even had a bit of a Mr. Goodbar thing going on, although I wish it had more almonds in it. Each bar has two servings, 160 calories each with 8 grams of sugar and 3 grams of fiber. For chocolate, you simply can’t beat that — and eating half a bar is SUPER satisfying. Indulgent even!
Next we tried the Daily Dose of Dark, which I really, really loved the idea of. It’s the perfectly sized, perfectly portioned little hit of healthy chocolate. The Original tasted just like the Original bar, just in a smaller format.

But the Mint + Cacao Nibs flavor was MIND-BLOWING. Rich chocolate mixed with refreshing mint plus a little crunch from some cacao nibs made this little treat taste like a Thin Mint or a Mint OREO Blizzard. For reals. This is the stuff mint-chocolate dreams are made of. And at just 50 calories a dose, color me smitten.

I also tasted some of NibMor’s Organic Drinking Chocolate. (Drinking chocolate … doesn’t that sound way fancier than hot chocolate?) You simply pour the 110-calorie mixes into hot water (or, I imagine coconut or almond milk would be amazing in this — an even richer treat!), dissolve and drink. And the mixes do dissolve quite easily.

While the Mint Drinking Chocolate was just okay (if you love mint, stick to the Daily Dose — the drinking chocolate was too light on the mint flavor for me), the 6 Spice was super interesting. A little spicy with some heat, this stuff was the perfect end to a meal. With cayenne, cinnamon, fennel, cloves and anise, it’s like a Mexican/Indian/Asian twist on hot chocolate. And it’s awesome. Both mixes feature coconut palm sugar as a sweetener, making these a lower glycemic choice than most of your name brands. Bonus!

With healthier ingredient lists, you can’t go wrong with NibMor whether you’re gluten-free, vegan, lactose-intolerant or anything — or nothing — in between. We love how tasty these dark chocolate goodies are, while still being natural and letting the health benefits of the chocolate be the star of the show (instead of covered up with butter, cream and other processed ingredients). So, yes, we like to NibMor when it comes to superfoods!
Do you consider chocolate to be a superfood? What’s your favorite way to enjoy it? —Jenn
