Best Fit Friend Story: Anita and Karen Are Lovin’ the Fitness Life!

What makes a fit life even better? A BFF! And by that we mean a Best Fit Friend! As part of BFF Week, we’re sharing some of our readers’ best fit friend stories! Today’s is from Anita, whose partner in (fit) crime is Karen! See all the BFF stories here.

Where do I begin?

I was dealing with a lot of stress in my life. My mom had taken ill; I was feeling miserable, lost, confused and knew I needed to do more than go to the gym and use the elliptical. I was looking on Facebook and came across a post about a program called Begin Her offered by NEPA FIT CLUB. Sounded interesting, but I did not want to do it alone.

I reached out to a few of my friends, who quickly turned me down! One stood up to the challenge, Karen. She was on board and ready to go. Our first class we walked in to this place like a deer in headlights! Here we meet the trainer and owner Mike, who immediately got us started with a warm up and talked about what we were going to do. We looked at each other — just a smile and a giggle is all that we had to share. We had no idea what we were in for!

Squats, kettle bells, deadlifts, counting reps, push-ups, presses, cleans? What, you want us to do push-ups? Behind the wall we went, laughing. We couldn’t go down, let alone push ourselves up — and we thought no one was watching but, OH, he was watching! We walked out that night knowing that if we were going to get through this we would have to push each other. From that night on we have supported and encouraged each other.

That was in October of 2013 — now we do push-ups, bear crawls, 200-pound deadlifts, 52-pound swings and 30-pound presses (plus lots more!). Not only have we both become stronger physically, we have grown closer and made great new friends at NEPA Fit Club. We have laughed together, gotten frustrated and made faces, but we never gave up on each other.

If it wasn’t for Karen pushing me, supporting me, checking in on me, I wouldn’t have gotten through the loss of my mom in December 2013; I wouldn’t have become stronger physically. We have gone through The Shred, graduated to Tough Her, took semi private lessons together and even started Boot Camp at the gym. She has listened to my anger, sadness and tears. We have kept each other in check with our calories, foods, weigh-ins, etc. She has been my rock and has put up with my moods, grounded me. Karen is always a call away for a 3-mile or 5-mile walk, and always has a, “Yes, what time do you want to go?” response. Never left my side. I couldn’t ask for another BFF!!!

Fitness and friendship … what more can a girl ask for (plus the best trainer in our area Mike Marcinek!)? Lovin’ the fitness life! —Anita

That’s my Super Partner…as we refer to each other at the gym.. We still push each other every time we walk into NEPA Fit Club. I could not have continued without Anita!! We’ve become so much more than workout buddies….we are truly BFF’s!!!
