The 11 Best Places to Buy Plus-Sized Fitness Apparel
We review a lot of cute workout apparel. But let’s be honest. Not a lot of it comes in sizes that are larger than an XL. And heeello (!) a lot of us need a little more workout wear room than an XL. So we asked our buds on Twitter (plus pulled your awesome suggestions from the comments!) and scoured the net for five great companies that offer plus-size fitness apparel that’s functional — and totally cute!
11 Best Plus-Sized Fitness Apparel Options
1. Old Navy. Who would have thought that Old Navy of all places would have a sweet plus-sized fitness apparel line? But they do. In sizes that go up to 4X, we dig their cute and affordable yoga pants, graphic Ts, hoodies, tanks and compression pants!
2. MODA By Sophia. Finally! A plus-sized company that makes apparel that’s actually designed for activity and has some form and style to it. (We spent hours looking online for options—many of which just offered Spandex shorts and tights for plus-sized women. Um, Spandex is barely flattering on supermodels, let alone normal gals.) 3. Nike. Yep, Nike has great plus-sized fitness apparel options. In sizes up to 3X, you can get Nike’s super-popular track running shorts, half-zip jackets, skorts and more. We love ’em and think you will, too. Get them at places like Kohl’s, Dick’s, Dillards and other retail stores — even eBay!
4. Champion. What’s not to love about Champion? Their gear is affordable, good quality and you can buy it at Target (a place that comes just below Trader Joe’s in terms of shopping delight). No matter your plus-size fitness apparel needs, Champion pretty much has them covered. Besides the basics, we’re particularly digging this beautiful patterned tank that comes in sizes up to 4X!
5. Juno Active. This is a brand that a reader recommended, and it’s awesome! Sizes go up to 6X and we are digging the prints and capris they offer in fun colors. (Finally more than just black or gray!)
6. Land’s End. Another reader fave, Land’s End has some dang cute long-sleeved Ts, tanks, jackets and leggings to choose from in sizes up to 3X. We particularly dig the skirted leggings!
7. Xersion. This brand that you can find at JCPenney goes up to 3X in size and features so many bright colors and fun patterns that we can’t pick our favorite piece. So. Darn. Fun.
8. Lola Getts Active. What Lola wants, Lola gets. And, in the case, Lola gets women. They have their own unique sizing chart and have great basics that really embrace the whole “athleisure” trend. (Which we love, by the way.)
9. Fit Girl Redefined. Size 14-16? Love to do yoga or cycle? This line is for you. And the woman who created it has the best story.
10. SportivePlus. Canadians, this one is for you! SportivePlus is oh-so sporty and has sizes up to 3X. Whether you’re doing yoga, playing some tennis or going out on the boat (we’re so jealous if you are!), this line is darn great.
11. FBG Store. Okay, so we don’t have a ton of plus-sized apparel, but we think that what we do have is worth highlighting! And many of them go up to 3X! So, in the true spirit of fit bottoms coming in all shapes and sizes, this line allow you to flaunt your bad self whether it’s doing some yoga, going for a walk or sweating it out at the gym. Wear it proudly, ladies—being a Fit Bottomed Girl is a mindset not a shirt size!

I tend to go for higher end stores, but I have to say Walmart has good quality workout clothes. I love their yoga pants and have many pairs in capri and full length.
REI also carries workout and outdoor gear in plus sizes online (wish it was in store!).
Junonia is also a good catalog and website and they go up to much larger sizes.
Thanks for the tips! Totally agree with Champion stuff from Target! I have a whole wardrobe of Champion workout gear and it’s good stuff, reasonably priced. I found the Old Navy compression capris a bit thin though and not much cheaper than Champion’s. They fit good but you could see my pink underwear thru the thin fabric.
Lands End has a LOT of really great stuff in a wide variety of sizes – it fits well & wears for a long time. I also like Athleta – they go up to 2X on some stuff, although their sizes do tend to run small. But they offer free shipping if you order more than $50. Target has a lot of great stuff in addition to the Champion gear they carry.
Old Navy definitely beats all tho – the compression gear is great and their prices cannot be beat.
Thank you for posting this! It is hard starting out at a gym and feeling that you don’t blend in with everyone else. Moisture-wicking clothes can make a huge difference in your comfortability factor and active support clothes are a bonus when trying to run. I wish active wear tops were slightly longer. Still want to hide my stomach 😉
I started at a 4x in pants and 3X in tops and am now (after 100 lbs) down to 1X or sometimes even XXL. I didn’t understand that XXL and 2X weren’t the same thing at first.
Junonia is my goto source for swimsuits, even though they are pricey, the fit is awesome and the tank suit with all-around bra support, is the only suit for me.
Favorite pants are Champion line at Target. Semi-fitted capris are my favorite.
As for active support bras – Glamorise and Champion are my favorite — both available in a variety of catalogs.
for sports bra, i have a bra by Title Nine that is called bye bye bounce bra. I LOVE IT.
Target is the only place i can find a plus size tall activewear pant. If anyone has any other suggestions where i can get a long inseam in something more than a XL you would be my new best friend.
Good article Jenn. Am going to send the link to my dear friend, plus size Shapely Girl trainer, Debra Mazda. Here’s my gripe about most workout lycra pants on the market: Why are they low cut at the waist? I know most jeans are low cut as that’s the trend, but snug fitting lyca pants that hit you low at the waist leaving your tummy jiggle exposed is just wrong. Try to pull them up to help hide your imperfections and you get a camel toe. Either way it’s a lose-lose scenario. I wish LuLuLemon would create a higher support waistband pant. I’m just sayin’…

One thing I’ve noticed, XL means something different to many companies. One shop locally has XL as a size 12 (really???). Others are a size 16 and yet others are size 18. Definitely ask the staff what XL translates to and try it on to be sure.
I’ve been wearing JCPenney’s Xersion line for plus sizes. I have bought their shorts, exercise shirts, “yoga” pants and running tights. They’ve all fit well, plus they go up to 3x (which I found to be quite roomy in some styles). And they can be relatively inexpensive.

I am so fed up with all of these websites that have been mentioned charge sooooo much for a simple shirt! No way should a shirt or a tank top be 50, 60, 90 plus dollars!!! I’m so frustrated!!! I am NOT paying that much!! Anyone have any links that don’t require I go into debt???

FABLETICS!!!! Even though Kate Hudson and all the other models are teeny weeny, they do go to plus sizes! Super cute and affordable!
Athleta goes up to 2x online & offers a large selection of their line in plus sizes. I’ve also heard Title 9 carries great product for larger sizes (I’d never tried them however).
