The Perfect Workout for When You’re Snowed in

Let me be up front about one thing: Since I live in Kansas City and did not get hit with the recent East Coast snowstorm (holy snow, Erin!), I can’t really complain about snow. But, it’s snowed a few inches here and it’s given me the opportunity to do one of my fave workouts this time of year: winter hiking!

Okay, so winter “hiking” is usually just walking around my neighborhood. And I’m not sure if two inches of snow makes walking all that much harder, but it’s certainly beautiful. And it’s a great way to get your fitness on when the streets are slick and you don’t want to get out. Not to mention that we could all use a little extra vitamin D this time of year, right?!

And, of course, I took my favorite workout buddy with me. She’s such a snow dog.

Plus, did you see my shoes? I was sent these sweet new kicks to try out from Merrell. They’re called the Capra Waterproof ($140), and I love them. And not just because they look cool.

These winter hiking boots are waterproof and — unlike many other hiking boots I’ve tested — felt good from the very first step. They were so warm and comfortable, even on my heels, which is an area that seems to often give me chafing probs. The grip on the sole is perfect, too. I hiked all around my ‘hood through snow, ice and slush and felt secure and sturdy with no slippage. Now, that’s a win.

Are you getting out in all the snow? This time of year it’s easy to just hunker down and stay inside where it’s warm, but I’ve found that with the right gear and attitude, getting outside can be just what the doctor ordered. Jenn
