How to Make the Most of the Mushroom Trend

One of my favorite lame jokes is:

Why did the mushroom get invited to every party?

Because he’s a fungi!

I know, I know. It’s terrible and awesome at the same time, right?

But, it’s also a really great way to introduce today’s subject: MUSHROOMS.

Because mushrooms are having a moment in the healthy food world. And here are a few ways we’re getting in on this trend.

Drinking Our Mushrooms, Hot

Coffee: Four Sigmatic Mushroom Coffee Mix

This stuff tastes like our regular coffee (and actually includes 50 mg of caffeine from Arabica coffee in it), but it’s also powered by Lion’s Mane and Chaga — giving you an extra mental boost. Medium-bodied and fruity, it’s delicious and the packets are really convenient when you’re traveling or camping because you can stir them in hot water. (p.s. They also make a Golden Latte with shiitake and turmeric that’s slightly sweet in case that’s more of your morning jam.)

Bone Broth: Kettle Fire Mushroom Chicken Bone Broth

If you love sipping on the ol’ bone broth, throw this one into your rotation. It’s all the collagen you love from a high-quality bone broth (12 grams in the serving you see above, to be exact) plus Lion’s Mane ‘shrooms. Tastes really good, too — rich and savory without being overly salty or earthy.

Hot Chocolate: Four Sigmatic Mushroom Hot Cacao Mix

Made with 500 mg of log-grown Reishi (if that doesn’t sound sexy, we don’t know what does), this sweet and cinnamon twist on hot chocolate is the perfect way to have a sweet treat and relax before bed.

Drinking Our Mushrooms, Cold

Smoothies: Om Mushroom Powders

Infuse your usual smoothie (and if you want some new smoothie ideas, you know we’ve got some here) with a mushroom-ified boost. Om has a ton of dried mushroom powders that are organic and don’t add any taste to your usual smoothie. No matter your goal, there’s a mushroom powder for you.

Energy drinks: Om Energy

Honestly, we’re not usually fans of “energy drinks” of any kind because they tend to be so processed and full of too much caffeine or fake sugar (and lead to a hard crash), but this one isn’t too shabby. It’s got a clean ingredient list, 90 mg of caffeine, stevia , turmeric, yerba mate, guarana, and a whole lot of mushrooms. The taste is rather — ahem — earthy, but it does give you a pick-me-up. Just mix with water and go.

Eating Our Mushrooms, in Meals

Cook with them!

Whether it’s in meatballs, udon noodle soup or tacos, even the non “superfood” kinds of mushrooms are delicious and healthy. Eat them up, yum!

Okay, got any other bad mushroom jokes I’d love to tell? Leave ’em in the comments, please. —Jenn

  1. I’ve actually tried the coffee mix one, loved it!

I’m really interested in trying some of these but I’m concerned that it may interact with medication I am currently taking. Do you know of any drug interactions or a reliable source where I could find that type of information?
    Thanks!

Good question, Faith! I found this on Four Sigmatic’s website: https://foursigmatic.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201660132-Interactions-and-cautions. Hopefully it helps!
