5 Ways to Say Yes to Yourself Today

You probably say “yes” to others a lot.

Can you pick something up on the way home? Yes.

Can you make me a snack, mom? Yes.

Can you get that report to me by the end of the day? Yes.

But, when’s the last time you said “yes” to yourself? When’s the last time you said “yes” to something that you really wanted or needed for you — and only you … just because?

If it has been awhile (and it probably has — this is super common for all of us), we’ve got the guest post for you! Straight from her new book, Say Yes to Yourself, Molly Burford is sharing five ways to say yes to yourself starting NOW!

(And, if you’re looking for more ways to boost your authentic confidence and feel more empowered, definitely pick up her book!)

5 Ways to Say Yes to Yourself Today

By Molly Burford

Are you seeking to feel more confident in your everyday life? Maybe you’ve begun to doubt yourself or have never really felt capable of achieving your dreams. Whatever the case, here are five tips that will help you show up to your life every day with self-assurance, excitement, and courage. These few lessons offer direction, clarity, inspiration, and practice for saying yes to yourself.

What does it mean to say yes to yourself, exactly? Saying yes means having faith in who you are and showing up to your life each day as your authentic self. It’s giving yourself permission to live the life you want to live.

Take these lessons in with an open mind and heart. You will need to unlearn the old lessons that made you doubt yourself in the first place. You will also need to tune out the harmful voices — from yourself or others — that have told you that you had to be everything and anything but yourself. You are enough. You are more than enough. You already have all the power within you to not only do what you want, but also what you need and are meant to do. Sometimes, you just need a little guidance.

1. Work with what you’ve got.

You are totally full of potential! You just need to tap in to the right parts of yourself and work with what you’ve got. Not a morning person but thrive in the afternoon? Use that to your advantage and schedule your most important meetings and tasks for noon onward whenever possible. Hate running but love going for hikes? Stop forcing yourself to get on the treadmill and find hiking trails for exercise. Whatever your situation may be, it just comes down to being realistic and self-aware. You’re perfectly fine the way you are. Really — you are! The trick is to focus on your strengths, not your weaknesses.

2. Do more of what you’re not great at.

You can’t be good at everything immediately, and nothing builds confidence like learning a skill and working to improve it! It’s also a great way to practice a little self-discipline, which will come in handy whenever you are faced with a more difficult task in the future. Whether it’s dancing, getting into home renovation, or public speaking, be kind to yourself and allow yourself to be less-than-amazing at something new. Exercise the beginner’s mind! To get the ball rolling, consider making a list of some things you aren’t totally great at. Pick one thing from that list to pursue today.

3. Try daily positive affirmations.

Positive affirmations are a fantastic way to manifest confidence. When you repeatedly tell yourself something, you really won’t have a choice but to believe it! Each morning, go to a mirror and repeat one of the positive affirmation suggestions below. You can even write these affirmations (or a few of your own design) on sticky notes and put them in places you will see them regularly so you’re reminded often of what an amazing person you truly are.

  • I am worthy.
  • I am smart and capable of handling my life.
  • I trust the universe has my back.
  • I have faith in myself.
  • I am loved.

4. Be your own best friend.

The person you spend the most time with is you. Every day — every minute — you are with yourself. And you also have the most say over how you feel about yourself. So why not be your own best friend? Take yourself out to dinner; go for a solo walk around town; have fun with yourself like you would a close friend. And speak kindly to yourself every day, just like you would to a friend. You wouldn’t belittle a friend for their haircut, would you? Be nice to yourself! Practicing positive self-talk and spending quality time with just you are great ways to better your relationship with yourself and cultivate a greater appreciation for who you are.

5. Invest in yourself.

You are your biggest investment. You wake up with yourself in the morning and go to sleep with yourself at night. Only you are responsible for you. And that’s pretty empowering stuff! Why? It’s all up to you to decide how you want to live. Everything you need rests within your own hands. Embrace this responsibility and invest in yourself. Make doctor appointments. Exercise. Eat right. Watch your emotional energy. You are your everything; never forget that.
