7 Kids’ Running Programs That Are Making a Difference
7 Running Programs That Help Kids
3. Chicago Run. Elementary school children in the Chicago area benefit both physically and academically from the Chicago Run program. Managed by a designated Chicago Run site coordinator and with the support of session leaders, both of which are volunteer school staff, children run or walk 15 minutes a day any time during their school day three to five times a week. The children record their distance in the virtual database and earn fun rewards to keep them motivated. The program ends with a fun celebration for participating students and their families. In addition to instilling the daily habit of running, children also learn about historical landmarks around their city.
How you can get involved: The Chicago Run program relies heavily on volunteers. Parents are encouraged to lead by example and sponsor donations are always welcome. Chicago Run is a school-based program, so school cooperation is a must. If you are a school employee and are interested in becoming a site coordinator, you can attend the Chicago Run training session at the beginning of each year. Along with your other school staff, you can also attend the free curriculum of professional development activities related to physical fitness and exercise.
