7 Running Programs That Help Kids

7. Fit Girls. Fit Girls is for 4th and 5th graders that encourages girls to be healthy in every area of their lives: their physical health, mental/emotional health and their community as a whole. Regular exercise teaches the girls the importance of taking care of their bodies, guided readings and discussions teach the girls the importance of exercising their minds, and community service and outreach teach the girls to have a healthy, charitable heart. The girls train for a 5K race by meeting for one hour, twice a week for six weeks. This isn’t just a running program; it’s also a reading and fundraising group that works to help create well-rounded young women.

How you can get involved: In order to start Fit Girls in your community, you will need parent/teacher/volunteer coach to oversee and manage the program. No need to be elite runner; just a good role model. You also need a host location, like a school or community center, with access to an appropriate workout space, like a track, playground or field, where your girls can safely run or walk quarter-mile laps. After you fill out the necessary paperwork and pay a $412 fee, Fit Girls will provide you with a manual outlining specific lesson plans for all 12 workouts, a non-competitive training schedule that gradually builds endurance to run/walk a 5K road race, stretching exercises, all the necessary forms for training and fundraising, a Fit Girls T-shirt and water bottle, and everything else you need to run a successful program aimed at making a difference.

Is there a running program in your area making a difference? Do you volunteer with a running program for kids? We’d love to hear about it! —Kelly
