Sipping Sustainably With VeeV

Ever get a craving for an out-of-the-ordinary cocktail, but don’t feel like busting out, like, eight obscure ingredients and following a precise recipe in order to make it? Yeah, if you’re like me, that might happen a lot. I mean, I love a good vodka tonic, don’t get me wrong! But sometimes I want something that makes my taste buds sit up and take note, and maybe ask a few questions, you know?
When VeeV first reached out, I was interested in the fact that it was made from the açaí berry. I come across a lot of liquor flavors, but I don’t know that açaí has ever been one of them. (Plus, it sounded awesome for Cocktails Week, right? Right!)
But, what really struck me was the sustainability aspect. It’s the world’s  first certified carbon neutral spirit, is a certified B Corporation, and the company designs every part of every bottle of VeeV and VitaFrute with sustainability in mind. What’s not to love about that?
Now, sure, this is all very interesting, but let’s get real — most of us don’t drink a cocktail entirely for its superfood ingredients or sustainable nature. That might all factor in, but the bottom line is that it’s gotta taste good or it’s just going to sit in the liquor cabinet.

VeeV Açaí Spirit

The 60 proof Açaí Spirit can be consumed along the lines of other liquors like vodka, rum or tequila, either on the rocks or mixed with … well, just about anything. VeeV offers recipes for using it to create a twist on the traditional margarita, sangria, mojito, cosmo, gimlet, mule and more — it just adds a wee bit of its own flavor to make it stand apart.
I held a little cocktail party for some friends to help me out with the tasting (work is hard, y’all), and we tried mixing it with both tonic and some blueberry-pomegranate juice. The verdict? Yum. Definitely different, but totally tasty.

Vita Frute Cocktails by VeeV: Lemonade

In addition to its Açaí Spirit, VeeV offers a variety of premixed cocktails that contain organic VeeV Açaí Spirit along with other ingredients — in this case, all-natural lemon juice and agave nectar. The 30 proof Lemonade flavor weighed in at less than 125 calories per serving (in, say, a short glass over ice — an 8-oz. glass will get you closer to 275 calories, and will probably also get you closer to Drunkytown, so, you know, moderation is always key).
I really dug this. In fact, I dug this so much that I had to be careful to pour myself small servings. It was so easy to drink I could’ve easily gone overboard, which is both a good (yay, deliciousness!) and a bad (boo, easy road to a hangover!) thing. But, that being said, it’s kind of an amazing option for events where you want a good mixed drink (like a picnic, maybe) but don’t want to deal with bringing liquor and mixers.
Do you tend toward a specific type of liquor? Would you be game to try an açaí berry liquor? And if so, what would you mix with it? —Kristen
