I’m the Worst Food Blogger Ever, But This Day Was Awesome

Well, it’s official: I’m the worst food blogger ever.
Although I love making, eating, photographing and talking about food, I am THE WORST about actually documenting my food. (And it’s not because of “rules” like this.) You’d think that after a year-plus of writing for FBE, I’d get better at this. But, despite my best attempts at capturing a whole day of food, I just can’t seem to do it. (And, guys, I’ve tried it all — setting the camera out in a place I see it as a reminder, setting phone alarms, texting myself, having Ryan help me to remember — to no avail.) So, I apologize in advance for the lack of photos here. Because I swear it was a really tasty and AWESOME day that I’ll always remember! And, really really did have every intention of fully documenting … even if I, well, quite clearly, didn’t.
It was BOOK DAY! So, I started things off on a super healthy anti-diet note. Green smoothies for Ryan and I! This one had Structure protein powder, a ridiculous amount of spinach, Barlean’s Greens and some roasted almond butter. Yes, it tasted pretty green, but I didn’t mind. (And I remembered to take a photo first thing, so I was feeling really good about myself and my food-blogging abilities.)

A couple hours into my day of writing and prancing about the house, knowing that The FBG Anti-Diet was officially out and into the world (it is an unreal feeling), I got a delivery. Flowers! Ever since my trip to Minnesota to visit General Mills, they have seriously been the best. Besides keeping my cupboards stocked with gluten-free Chex, they do thoughtful and clever stuff like this. Love them. And talk about gorgeous!

A cup of coffee later plus about a 1,000 Tweets and Facebook notes of gratitude to others for being genuinely excited for our book, it was somehow nearing lunch time. I went out for a short mile or so run (ankle issues still afoot — get it? Har har!) and walk with the pup, and then came back seriously hangry.
I had made a steamed kale salad with a simple apple-cider and herb vinaigrette that was topped with chopped pecans and dried cherries the night before, and luckily for me, there were leftovers. I cooked up two runny eggs in my new ceramic pan that’s just for cooking eggs (it’s amazing — full review coming soon!).

I cracked the yolk, but it was still yummy.

Yep, everything is better with an egg (or two!) on it.

After that, I had a bit of a sweet tooth. So I grabbed these.

And then I remembered this photo that our Fit Bottomed Mamas’ writer Jennifer shared, and thought, hey, why not steal — er — I mean borrow that as inspiration? And thus, I topped my strawberries with some vanilla coconut yogurt and raw cacao nibs. Jennifer is right; this concoction is fabulous.

So up into this point, I am an awesome food blogger. I’ve captured everything! Even flowers and a treat!
And then, later that afternoon, the stomach starts growling again. So I go and get a bite of this coconut butter.
But, 20 minutes later, I realize that I forgot the photo.
So … I go back and stage one. And then, you know, eat some more chocolate coconut butter. (I wasn’t going to be that untrue to you guys!)

You’d think that little food-photo misstep would have made me more aware and able to remember to take a photo, but it was all downhill from there. Totally downhill.
Here’s how my afternoon went: shower, Barnes & Noble, Athleta, District Pourhouse+Kitchen for an impromptu book celebration happy hour with some of my close friends and my parents. I brought my camera for all of this and didn’t use it once. It just sat there, sad and lonely in my bag.
In fact, the only photos I got from the book happy hour was one I snapped on my phone as — insanely serendipitously — “Fat Bottomed Girls” by Queen came on the sound system at the bar.

And then, this one of my friend Jessica and me that her husband took.

Again, photography fail.
But what you’re not seeing is that we had LOTS of yummy gluten-free apps as dinner, including chicken lettuce wraps, shrimp ceviche and sweet potato fries. Plus, plenty of liquor infusions on the rocks, which is pretty much the best thing ever. (Apple cinnamon bourbon? YES.) And it was a FABULOUS time. Everyone there has been a huge supporter of me and the whole Fit Bottomed world since the beginning, so it was the perfect celebration. Only thing missing was Erin and my other FBGs.
Once we got home, Ryan and I sat on the front porch with some earl gray tea and the pup. Which I also didn’t get a photo of. But, believe me when I say that it was a great end to a great day.
Any other food bloggers who flake on taking photos? Any tips for helping me to remember? Gosh knows I need ’em! —Jenn
