UnderReview: Your Perfect Yoga DVD (& Giveaways!)

There are sooo many yoga DVDs on the market these days! Here are three recently released yoga titles. Whether you want a killer workout (ahem: Jillian), no hippity-dippity stuff or a relaxed time on the mat, we think that you’ll find something that you love below!

Jillian Michaels Yoga MeltdownJillian Michaels: Yoga Meltdown

When I first heard that  Jillian Michaels was coming out with a yoga DVD I was a little confused. After all, isn’t yoga Bob’s thing? But all of her other workouts are so darn good that my curiosity was definitely was piqued. Plus, we got A LOT of Twitter requests to review it. So we did! And what did we think, you ask? We likey. We likey a lot.

This DVD has Level 1 and Level 2 workouts on it. The first one is about 34 minutes long, and the second one is just shy of 30 minutes. With no frills or sanskrit (perfect for ya’ll who get freaked by chanting or om-ing in yoga), Jillian delivers one heck of a tough workout. And while Level 2 is harder than Level 1 (they do crow pose, people!), Level 1 is no picnic (she warms you up with planks, if that’s any indication). And while you’re not holding poses for a long time, you are going through challenging sequences quickly with little time for rest.

And at the end of the day, that’s what I like about Jillian. She gets you in, she kicks your ass, and gets you on with your day. There is one strange part where Jillian keeps repeating “Who’s your daddy?” but no DVD is entirely perfect or free of awkward moments, I guess.

Best for: Advanced and intermediate FBGs looking to add some yoga or functional training moves to their day while also burning some cals! Also a good fit for those who think yoga is boring—or not a workout. (You shall be proven wrong!)

No Om ZoneThe No OM Zone

For some reason, when we got this DVD in the mail, I thought that it would be tough—a true competitor to Jillian in terms of toughness. Well, it’s not. But that’s not exactly a bad thing and after carefully looking at the DVD, I can’t really figure out why I got that impression anyway. The instructor Kim Fowler is a former triathlete so maybe her bad-assness just comes through.

Regardless, the DVD is a no-frills approach to yoga. It’s just Kim, a mat and you, and she leads you through three 15-minute workouts: one for the upper-body, one for the lower-body and one for the core. The workouts aren’t easy, but they aren’t overly challenging either, and they feature familiar poses like down dog, chatarunga, table top, dolphin and plank. Each session features a quick breathing warm-up and a cool down twist followed by corpse pose (my fave!). I was especially smitten with the core workout, which seemed to be more challenging than the others, but that may have more to do with my injury than anything else.

For those of you who aren’t fans of the instructor voiceover (ahem, Erin), this one does that feature. And while the music in the intro sounds like “In the Waiting Line” by Zero 7—one of my FAVE songs—there is no music in the workouts themselves, except for when you cool down. Bummer!

Gentle Vinyasa FlowGentle Vinyasa Flow

This DVD is all about moving, breathing and flowing. And unlike the last couple, it’s totally yoga-y and pretty hippity-dippity. I really, really enjoyed it, but I would consider it more Vinyasa yoga than a true workout.

This DVD has a very gentle and relaxing vibe with moves that increase flexibility and build functional strength through poses timed to breathing. The instructor, Zyrka (now that is the name of a yogi), leads you through six yoga sequences each with their own difficulty level and length: two 30-minute sequences, two 45-minute sequences and two hour-long sequences. There are a lot of options here, which is rare for a DVD, especially yoga where you normally get just a couple of  short segments to combine for a longer workout.

And take note beginning yogis: The DVD also features a unique pose guide section that gives detailed instruction on 23 poses including positioning, common mistakes, pose benefits and contraindications. This allows you to learn the basics of each pose without having to listen to detailed instructions every single time you do the workout. Bonus!

FIT BOTTOMED LINE: EACH DVD BRINGS SOMETHING SPECIAL TO THE TABLE. IF YOU’RE A NEWBIE WHO LIKES THE SPIRITUAL SIDE OF YOGA, GET WITH THE VINYASA FLOW. IF YOU’RE A NEWBIE OR INTERMEDIATE EXERCISER WHO COULD DO WITHOUT THE HIP AND DIP, GO WITH ZONE. AND IF YOU’RE LOOKING FOR A CHALLENGE WITHOUT THE FLUFF, GO WITH “YOUR DADDY” JILLIAN MICHAELS.

They all look pretty interesting. Most interested in the Jillian one…totally love her other workouts so I’m sure to enjoy this one as well. I just started adding Yoga into my workouts. It normally is a nice switch for the other things I do.

  2. Kelly says

LOVE LOVE LOVE JILLIAN! (but kinda hate her at the same time lol– she kicks my butt!) I can’t afford to go to yoga classes as much as I love them, $15 a class is getting rough! So I have been desperately looking for a great DVD- Thanks gals!

  3. Saira says

They all look good. I like the second one as an add-on to a run or other workout. It might force me to actually stretch ;).

  4. Katie Davis @ Pop Culture Cuisine says

I loved that you all featured this video today. I actually get a lot of workouts free with our “On Demand” through our cable provider and Jillian’s Yoga Meltdown Level 1 just happened to be one of them. I was needing a change of pace and decided to try it out yesterday. I really like it! I am not much of a yoga lover and loved the faster pace that this delivered. I would definitely do it again.

  5. Nicole says

I’ve been thinking about getting myself back into yoga, and winning one of these videos would be a great start! The Jillian one definitely intrigues me the most, especially since she’s kicked my butt in every workout of hers that I’ve tried!

  6. gabbyw says

I started doing yoga last summer as a stretching/alternate workout day to my normal round of Jillian DVD’s and workouts. I have been amazing at my increased flexibility and improved posture. I can’t believe I waited this long in life (38) to start yoga. I love it!! I have Jillian’s new yoga DVD and really like it. I call it yoga on steroids because you are doing sun salutations at triple speed. I would love to win one of the other two- they look great too. Thanks for the giveaway!

PS- Any chance of reviewing Shaun T’s Insanity workout?

  7. Cristin says

I think I could use a yoga dvd right about now – too much stress! I would love to win one of these! They look great!

  8. Denise Williams says

I would LOVE a chance at winning one of these DVD’s. I am really into running and lifting, it’d be nice to have a day where I can relax in the comfort of my own home!

  9. Barbara says

All three DVD’s looks awesome. I got a sample of Jillian’s Yoga Meltdown onDemand and I loved it! It totally kicked my tushy but it was an awesome yoga workout. I would love to try the whole workout.

  10. Christy says

I have been looking for a way to incorporate yoga into my workouts, and these look great!

  11. Gayla B says

I love DVD workouts but so far, not the yoga ones. I’d love to try one of the two that aren’t “hippy-dippy.”

  12. nellie says

I’m definitely intrigued by Jillian’s, just because of her reputation….but I’m always looking for a good core burn, so the No OM Zone sounds good too from what you reviewed…

  13. Melanie says

I’ve been on the lookout for a yoga dvd that still packs in a pretty significant workout!

  14. Cat says

Oooh, I’m bookmarking this post. I’ve been trying to get into yoga for a while but it’s hard to find classes because I travel a lot. Somehow I didn’t think about DVDs.

  15. Alice says

I work long hours and would like an alternative at-home work out to going to the gym on nights where I just want to head straight home! I’m on the top floor and know a non-jumping around workout DVD will be appreciated by the neighbors, too!

  16. Betherann says

I have to say that Jillian disappointed me for the first time with Yoga Meltdown. I won’t deny that it’s a decent workout, but I can’t agree that it’s yoga. I blogged/whined more about it here: http://www.kitchencourage.com/2010/04/betrayed.html I think Jillian should stick to her cardio/interval/strength workouts in the future and leave yoga well enough alone. That said, I wouldn’t mind adding it or one of the other 2 DVDs above to my collection!

  17. Jeannette says

Recently joined sparkpeople and found this blog through reading your article there on blogging as a helpful weightloss tool. Wow lots of great reading here – FBG has been favorited! As for the DVDs, bring on the Hip d Dip! I’d love to win the Vinyasa Flow. :)

  18. Ashlee says

I would love to try Jillian’s yoga dvd. It made me laugh when I read she says “who’s your daddy”. She almost always gets on my nerves after a while in the workout dvds, but she knows how to give you a great workout.

  19. Breebers says

Would love the second one — I have a couple ‘relaxing’ yoga DVDs that I love, but really need something a little more intense and focused on those areas. Plus, that 15-minute routine time might actually fit into my daily schedule :)

  20. Terrie @ Fit4myLifetime says

Since my doc recently counseled me to reduce the stress in my life (I’m a high school English teacher…what in the world makes him think I have stress?? LOL), I’m leaning toward the Vinyasa dvd. It sounds exactly like what I need. :)

  21. Kim says

Jillains!!! I truly love Jillian! I am working on getting into shape after my 2 kids and this would be awesome! all of them look awesome!!!

  22. Andrea says

I’ve been waiting for you gals to review Jillian! I’ve been really curious. Happy to hear it’s a great workout!

  23. Ambs says

I am a yoga *freak* — and I looooooooove Jillian as well; she’s helped me get and stay in shape. Would love any of these DVDs — but particularly Jillian’s, she’s such a sexy beast!

  24. Allison says

The Gentle Vinyasa Flow DVD sounds like the one I would like the best. I have read several reviews of Jillian’s workout, and I don’t think it is for me. Thanks for the reviews.

  25. Natalie says

I would love to try any of these DVDs. I have to cut back on my studio classes to save some money, so a new DVD would be a great way to keep practicing regularly.

  26. Becky says

BTW, this post is not showing up when you click on the “giveaways” link. Maybe you forgot to tag it?

  27. Allie says

Hey! I would love to try any of these but I’m thinking I would have to do one of the beginner DVDs because I am not THAT good yet. JUST KIDDING! :P

  28. Laura says

Love yoga — all kinds. Have never tried any Jillian, but would love to give her a shot. Thanks for the reviews :)

  29. Jan Holt says

I really enjoyed these reviews. I’ll be checking the last one out particularly… sounds like my kind of yoga.

    Thanks for the heads up!

  30. Jaclyn says

I’m a big fan of yoga and of Jillian, so I’d love to win her DVD. The others sound great too… and I like me some hippity dippity!

  31. Kate says

Jillian and yoga scares me, but in a good way! I would love to win one of these DVDs. I really need to get into a regular yoga routine!

  32. Sylvia says

I had been getting into a yoga class that was being offered by my local gym. But now they’ve moved the class up, so it meets while I’m still at work!

I’d love to use one of these DVDs to get the yoga experience again.

  33. Debbie says

Oh, my Yoga fix! I would love to win any of these. I am trying to watch my pennies with the workout DVDs these days, so hoping I win. I got a great deal on Yoga Journal recently, so trying to get my yoga fix that way but not the same as DVDs. Thanks FBGs!

  34. Jess says

Oh how I love/hate Jillian! There are ZERO yoga classes offered near me and these DVDs would be great!

  35. Jolie says

I have to say thank you for the review. I am glad I found this site. I have been wondering about some of the yoga dvd’s and especially Jillian Micheals. I would love to win The Yoga Meltdown but of course wouldn’t object to any workout DVD too. I love Jillians workouts sooooo much and that is why I would want that one – Plus I have all of her DVD’s except this one.

  36. Heather says

I would love to win any of these dvds! I need a reason to shape up my fat bottom to a fit bottom!

  37. Dineen says

i love your website and your reviews. that being said, i would love to win these dvds. i have a 20 mo old so i don’t have alot of time to escape to a yoga class. these dvds would be great for me to do during naptime. i love yoga and love to try new workout dvds. thanks fbg’s!

  38. Pamela says

These dvds look great…and I could sure use some new motivation! RTed too.

  39. Hope says

I love yoga and I love Jillian. Jillian Yoga has to be heaven! I’d love to try it!

  40. Danielle says

I would love to win Jillian’s video! I’m a huge fan of her workouts and this is one DVD that I don’t have.

  41. Mary says

I’m a yoga newbie who needs a good stretching workout – so love Jillian so this is tough to say but Jillian isn’t for me. It’s the other two I’d love to try.
